Taking Care: Collection Support Studio | APRIL 1 – AUGUST 20, 2023
This spring/summer, the Henry is excited to display an unprecedented number of works from the museum’s permanent collection while a collection storage space undergoes an important upgrade. Visitors will have the unique opportunity to experience approximately 130 large, framed photographs, prints, and drawings that will be removed from storage and hung salon-style in the Henry’s expansive South Gallery.
Featured artists include Walead Beshty, Enrique Celaya, Nan Goldin, David Hartt, Los Carpinteros, Richard Misrach, Vik Muniz, Amanda Ross-Ho, Kiki Smith, and Hiroshi Sugimoto, among others.
After hanging, each work will be removed from the wall one by one for condition assessment, cataloging, and photography before being returned to storage, marking the progress of the collection team’s often-invisible work. Beyond facilitating the renovation of a critical art storage space, this process will allow Henry staff an opportunity to improve collections records and offer visitors a rare chance to see aspects of museum work that ordinarily happen behind closed doors.
The Henry’s permanent
collection includes both historical and contemporary artworks, collected since the museum’s inception in 1926. The collection now contains more than 28,000 works of art and is a significant cultural resource available to scholars, researchers, and the general public.
Taking Care will be accompanied by a series of educational videos and conversations on topics relating to conservation, collection management, and other lesser known facets of museum operations.
Taking Care: Collection Support Studio is organized by Dr. Ann Poulson, Curator of Collections. Generous support is provided by T. William Booth.
